AMANTECH
(C.I. PIGMENT WHITE 23)
GLOSS WHITE 1516
C.I. Constitution Number: 77122
MAIN END USE APPLICATION(S):
- PRINTING INKS
- CRAYON COLORS
- PAPER INDUSTRY (Maplitho Paper, Coated Paper, Art Board, Duplex Board, Coated
Duplex Board, Tissue Paper, Xerox Paper etc...)
OTHER APPLICATIONS:
Gloss White finds application as an extender and filler pigment in:
- Writing Papers
- News Print (and other varities of paper)
- Rubber
- Adhesives
- Poster Colors
- Gloss White is a companion product to light Alumina Hydrate. The use of Gloss White as a
dry pigment powder has also been confined mainly to PAPER & INK applications. Gloss
white is valued for its soft, non abrasive texture and its excellent working and printing
properties. It is less susceptible to "Livering" than light Alumina Hydrate.
- Although Gloss White is more expensive than a mechanical blend of 3BaSO4/Al(OH)3,
the coprecipitate is favored on the basis of superior processing characteristics and
reduced tendency to absorb drier from ink vechicles on storage.
- For the preparation of colorant lakes, Gloss White is prepared in situ. Gloss White is a
coprecipitated pigment comprising approximately 75 % Barium Sulphate (blanc fixe) and 25%
Aluminium Hydroxide. It is denser and some what less brilliant than light Alumina Hydrate,
light Alumina Hydrate so formed in situ is valued as substrate for the precipitation of
lake pigments due to its fine degree of dispersion (a fluffy gelatinous precipitate) low
density, highly receptive surface for dyestuffs, excellent processing properties and
outstanding printing quality.

USES IN PRINTING INKS:
- Gloss White has a specific oil absorption and this property enables it to impart a
significant viscosity increase to lithographic printing inks (improves the working
properties of the ink).
USES IN RUBBERS & PAINTS:
- It has found some use as a rubber filler to increase tear resistance. Earlier Gloss
White has not been used in paints due to its high cost, high oil absorption and chemical
reactivity.
USES IN PAPER:
- Gloss White improves BRIGHTNESS, OPACITY, SMOOTHNESS, POROSITY, INK RECEPTIVITY, GLOSS,
WHITNESS, K and N value, SOA value (Surface Oil absorption value), QUICK DRYING. Gloss
White also improves the pH value thus increasing Gloss, quick drying of Ink and reduce Ink
consumption resulting good printability.
- The costly chemicals like TITANIUM DIOXIDE, ZINC OXIDE, CALCIUM CARBONATE and ALUMINA
HYDRATE can be replaced by "GLOSS WHITE" to get the same results of opacity and
brightness. There is no problem in dispersing Gloss White and also the binder requirement
is the same as other pigments. The coated products will be better where coating slip
includes Gloss White.
COST REDUCTION:
- Most of the paper manufactures have reduced there consumption of Titanium Dioxide to
nearly 50% by using Gloss White-1516. They have replaced 100 parts of Titanium Dioxide by
addition of 50 parts of Titanium Dioxide and 50 parts of GLOSS WHITE - 1516 and thus
reducing cost without any change in quality.
SUPERIORITY OF GLOSS WHITE - 1516
OVER BARIUM SULPHATE & ALUMINA HYDRATE
- Barium Sulphate : It would improve Brightness,Opacity and minimize Porosity and
blackening on Calendar & Super Calendar.
- Alumina Hydrate : Improves Whiteness and Ink Receptivity and Gloss.
- Gloss White : Improves BRIGHTNESS, WHITENESS, OPACITY, SMOOTHNESS, GLOSS, INK
RECEPTIVITY and MINIMIZE THE BLACKENING.
DOSAGE:
- For Paper Industry: Those who are using Titanium Dioxide can use 50% TiO2
& 50% GLOSS WHITE-1516 to reduce the cost without affecting the quality.
- Paper Coating Industry: Can replace TiO2, ZnO and other
Pigments to get equivalent results. This improves SOA and K and value required for fast
multicolor printing & ink gloss.
